Thanks for uplaoding these images. If you can, it's usually better to upload these images from your hard drive, rather than directly from Flickr using Magnus bot, because COTA images typically need to be cropped to remove the notation (and it's a bit of a hassle to do it after the upload). Thanks. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:04, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

- You do understand that you are creating more work for other people? We all upload images sometimes that need a crop, but doing it repeatedly just adds to the backlog of work that others need to do. At a minimum, please add a {{Crop}} tag.--Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:03, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

adding a box[edit]
Could you please update the comment you added to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Osama bin Laden making a video at his compound in Pakistan-2.jpg to put a box around the e-mail message? I'll help make it stand out better from the discussion. For example.
This is an example of the e-mail.
Pull this message up in edit mode and you'll see how I did the box. There's the opening div at the beginning and a closing /div at the end. Thank you. Marc Kupper (talk) 01:36, 10 May 2011 (UTC)
DoD response[edit]
So you got this email in response to your question about these Osama bin Laden images?--Chaser (talk) 03:28, 18 May 2011 (UTC)
- That's the response that pops-up after you send the email, I guess they send the "official" response when they read your email. Sounds good enough for me to allow usage in Commons... Oaktree b (talk) 03:36, 18 May 2011 (UTC)

How can this be under a CC license? It should be either PD or copyright violation... AnonMoos (talk) 22:16, 12 April 2012 (UTC)
- Released under a CC license by the library that holds the document in their collection. Oaktree b (talk) 02:16, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
- That's nice -- the library presumably did not have the copyright on this leaflet assigned to it by the Japanese ministry of propaganda, and the mere act of mechanically scanning in a 2D source does not create any new copyright which is recognized by Wikimedia Commons policies. Therefore the copyright tags are still wrong. You can ask for a third opinion at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. AnonMoos (talk) 03:16, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi again, Oaktree b! :-) - Thanks four your description translations in File:Zentralbibliothek Solothurn - Abbildungen zur Länder u Völkerkunde - a0486.tif. However, I think they missed the fact that the illustrations are based on wordplay, i.e. puns on the names of city inhabitants. Of course I do not blame you for this at all, because, as you told me, you don't read German and translate the descriptions with the help of Google Translate, which of course can't detect puns :-). If one reads German, the nature of the puns is obvious, but I think it needs some explanation in the English and French description. I have tried to do this now in the English description - but as I don't write French, maybe you could adapt the French description based upon the now-revised English one? Would be great! This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Sfinții Voievozi Monastery inside.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Hi Oaktree b,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Toronto Public Library locations.jpg is out of date. Could you update it? Thanks again. Mindmatrix 15:33, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking into this. The new branch is Fort York, but as you've stated, it doesn't appear to be included in the library's KML file. Mindmatrix 14:36, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
- It appears to be on the plot of land immediately east of Bathurst and south of the rail lands (see branch info map). My best guess is 43.64N, 79.40W (Google Maps link), give or take depending on where you want to centre it. Mindmatrix 14:50, 30 May 2014 (UTC)

Harry Connick image[edit]
You uploaded File:Harry+Conick+Jr+at+LOC+event+-+main.jpg claiming it was taken by Abby Brack of the Library of Congress but gave the source as VoA. The only image I can find at LOC by Abby Brack is the one on this webpage which is not the same as the VoA source image which is attributed to the AP. There are other images from the same event online possibly aken by other attendees. So my question is, are you sure the image is properly attributed? I was tring to find the LOC source in order to add the correct LOC digital ID which is missing from the LOC template. Just drop me a talkback or ping me. Ww2censor (talk) 18:36, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- At the time, it was tagged on the Voice of America website as being a photo made by the LOC. Loading the link now, it seems to be an AP photo. It can be deleted; I get these popping up now and again, it seems the LOC was not properly attributing their photo sources. Oaktree b (talk) 20:05, 9 September 2015 (UTC)
- This Wayback Machine archive page does indeed attribute the image to Abby Brack. Do we even know if she is/was an employee of the LOC? If not either way I think I'll nominate it for deletion is you agree. Ww2censor (talk) 16:22, 13 September 2015 (UTC)
- Actually, it seems she was an employee of the Library of Congress, might be ok to leave it. See http://www.abbybrack.com/pages/3/About/About/ Oaktree b (talk) 22:49, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

Nelson's Pillar, Dublin[edit]
How do you know that this image was released into the public domain by the NLI? You added a release statement tot he image but I doubt it can be verified. The direct NLI link lists the author as Michael S. Walker and a search of his work indicates he was still active in 1988 and maybe even later, so the image cannot be in the public domain. The NLI has just not got any more information but we can deduce a copyright range date from their catalogue. Please let me know what you think. Ww2censor (talk) 10:12, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- With regards to the photo of Nelson's Pillar [[1]] it was posted on the NLI Flickr Commons photostream. They only allow photos in the public domain, so the NLI holds the rights to the photo and released it into the public domain. Oaktree b (talk) 13:21, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
- Actually that is not true they did not release it in the the public domain they released it as "no known copyright restrictions" which is entirely different. A few such images have been deleted because the photographer was not dead 70 years as with this one. I think it is actually still in copyright because the NLI's catalogue lists the author as Michael S. Walker. A search of their holding shows he was still active in 1988 and maybe even later, so its copyright status is actually unclear. The "no known copyright restrictions" tag states that one should add additional copyright tags to this image if more specific information about copyright status can be determined which puts the onus on us and not on the institution. The NLI tag does not verify the image is in the public domain, just that they don't know of any restriction. I've been dealing with copyright issues for a long time and that's my take on it. I though perhaps you had researched it more and found some verification that it is in the public domain. Thanks anyway. Ww2censor (talk) 14:29, 24 March 2016 (UTC)
VOA[edit]
There are many files under VOA on commons after 2013. I though the discussion was still going on at Commons:Deletion_requests/Template:PD-USGov-VOA. Is it now clarified that we can not use VOA file after june 2013 ? (see a request of deletion discussed here File talk:Phurbu T. Namgyal.jpg). Best wishes. --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 11:27, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hello, thanks for your response. Do you think I could use {{PD-USGov-VOA|yes this is original VOA work, not by AP or AFP etc=yes}} and place it myself on files that I uploaded under VOA license? This may help work of verification. However, it should be stated in this tag "between 1998 and June 2013", so something like {{PD-USGov-VOA|yes this is original VOA work between 1998 and June 2013, not by AP or AFP etc=yes}} --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 16:21, 26 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks. The current tag {{PD-USGov-VOA|yes this is original VOA work, not by AP or AFP etc=yes}} correspond to Category:PD VOA (VOA). It is meant to correspond to non AP/AFP file. If I find one of my VOA file after june 2013, shall I indicate my self to speedy delete it ? --Rédacteur Tibet (talk) 19:43, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

The Romanian river monitors[edit]
Greetings. I noticed one of your works, called "Sergeant serving on NMS Catargiu" or something, and I was wondering: could you please create a file for the actual Lascăr Catargiu river monitor? I found a picture of her here, together with Brătianu. There's also a rather small picture with Mihail Kogălniceanu here, or a general digital model for a Romanian monitor of the class here, from Photobucket. Or, if neither of these can be used, maybe you can at least create English versions of the Russian files used here. Either way, please, at least 1 picture. For it is a shame, that these vessels, the largest and most powerful Danube warships, of almost 700 tons, to have actually no picture file of them on the English Wiki. 79.118.118.244 15:04, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.
Dear Oaktree b,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
Thanks,
--Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 08:42, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, I was wondering if it was at all possible to use your image that you posted to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_van_attack#/media/File:Toronto_Remembers_2018.jpg. I work for RNAO and we wanted to use an image like this just to say thank you to the people who have donated blood and Sunnybrook Hospital. you can reach me at azarboni@rnao.ca. For now, I was going to grab the image and use it with attribution on the article page. Let me know if this is okay. I hate using images without express permission. - Adam Zarboni

Duplicate versions of 1957 Railway Map Atlas of Canada[edit]
There seem to be duplicate versions of the Atlas of Canada's 1957 railway map at File:1957 Railway Map Atlas of Canada.pdf and File:1957 Railway Map of Canada 083.pdf. You uploaded both, undoubtedly the second copy by accident. I have tagged the "1957 Railway Map Atlas of Canada" version with a {{Duplicate}} template for speedy deletion. --papageno (talk) 20:01, 2 July 2018 (UTC)
Ontario Heritage Act Register[edit]
Hi there. I created {{Ontario Heritage Act Register}} for use on files, categories, and galleries about sites registered with the Ontario Heritage Trust. You can see examples of its use at File:Noble House in Georgina Pioneer Village.jpg (which you uploaded) and Category:Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives. I hope this is useful to you. - @Mindmatrix: Are you interested to create template for other provincial registers in Canada? I can give you the url formal of Quebec, Alberta and PEI registers if you want. --Fralambert (talk) 01:55, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Post the links on my talk page, and I'll (slowly) work on the individual templates over the next month or so. Mindmatrix 13:12, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

RE:Category:National Register of Historic Places[edit]
Thank you for all the photos that you are uploading to the Commons for the Wiki Loves Monuments event. You are correctly putting multiple images of the same building/object into a category for that building/object. However, you are leaving Category:National Register of Historic Places in place. Because this is a main category it does not include images and categories of individual properties. Because of the sheer volume of images that you have uploaded, you have flooded this category with images that must now be removed from that category. If you are going to continue to upload more images could you please remove that category from the individual images? Could you also go through the images that are there and remove the category? I did some yesterday, but there are so many now and this is a situation that you created. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Farragutful (talk) 11:59, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition 2019[edit]
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.
If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2020 – Last day to enter![edit]
This user participated in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020. |
{{User Wiki Loves Monuments 2020}}
to your userpage!Hi there! Kevin from Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States here. I know it's been a tough year for everyone, and I hope this message finds you well.
You are receiving this message as a participant in last year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2019 in the United States. First, a recap: We concluded with over 5,200 great photos of U.S. historical sites made possible by contributors like you. If you haven't yet seen, last year's U.S. winners are viewable here, and the international winners here (including multiple from the United States!).
Second, as you may have seen from the banner notices on Wikipedia, this year's Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States has been running through October instead of September in consideration of the pandemic and the hectic start of the fall season. Despite the challenges of the year, we're thrilled that the United States has surpassed 5,000 photo contributions so far.
October 31st is the last day to upload photos for the U.S. competition this year. If you've already contributed, thank you so much - and it's great to have you again this year! If you haven't yet contributed but are interested in participating again, you're invited to join us during these last couple days. Check out the United States event page for more information. Remember that you are welcome to upload and submit photos of historic sites that you've taken any time in the past, not just this month.
As always, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 07:21, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

OGLO[edit]
Bonjour Oaktree b,
-- Asclepias (talk) 18:28, 5 May 2021 (UTC)
Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States 2021[edit]
Hello! Last year you contributed to Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in the United States. Thanks to people like you, it was a great success with over 1,000 people contributing almost 6,000 photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the country. Hundreds of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, improving our open knowledge about United States history, culture, and heritage. If you haven't seen the winners yet, be sure to check them out here.
I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2021 in the United States through the month of October, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information.
Once again, thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2020, and we hope to see you again in this year's event! If you'd like to respond to this message directly, please do so on on my talk page. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 21:19, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started[edit]
Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.
If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.
If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.
Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".
If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.
Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

File:Canadian Pacific RDCs One Evening at Mount Laurier, Quebec -- 4 Photos - 34289323346.jpg[edit]
Hi, Do you think File:Canadian Pacific RDCs One Evening at Mount Laurier, Quebec -- 4 Photos - 34289323346.jpg could be deleted, given that it is an almost duplicate of File:Canadian Pacific RDCs One Evening at Mount Laurier, Quebec -- 4 Photos (34289323346).jpg? The difference being the colour change on the latter. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:41, 29 March 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I hadn't noticed until I uploaded it that it was an almost duplicate. Should be ok to delete. Oaktree b (talk) 23:52, 29 March 2022 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Methodology suggestion[edit]
I see you've been uploading images taken from Chronicling America. A while back, I worked out a better method for getting those images - one which enables us to have larger, higher-resolution versions. You may find the method useful. (I've uploaded larger, higher-resolution versions of some of your images already.) DS (talk) 19:10, 20 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll try it. I've been extracting from the PDF as I didn't have a program that could use jp2. I'll give it a try! Oaktree b (talk) 19:14, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:LG 울트라기어 앞세워 게이밍 모니터 수요 잡는다.jpg[edit]
This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:LG 울트라기어 앞세워 게이밍 모니터 수요 잡는다.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]
Read this message in your language
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

File tagging File:Raina Huang from Instagram.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Raina Huang from Instagram.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Raina Huang from Instagram.jpg]] ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
