Thanks and questions[edit]

Hi John ... First off, thanks for all the great stuff you do for our common hobby. It seems we share a passion. Although I've pretty well covered the SF Bay Area on my photo excursions the past 5+ years, I look forward to playing with your Android app. However, when I go to the Android store on my AT&T phone and search for 'unvisited', all I get is an app that maps restaurants (I think). Any suggestions for finding the app?

As you may have noticed, I've been adding Massachusetts NRHP photos to architecture- and date-specific categories. I've found one of yours that I think is mis-identified. The MACRIS entry for the Eleazer Hyde House in Waban, MA describes the 18th-century Georgian house to the west of the large late-19th-century Queen Anne house in your photo. Your photo is of 389 Woodward St., the Frederick H. Henshaw House. With your consent, I'd like to change the description and categorize the photo accordingly.

Whoops! Thanks for catching my house mistake! Feel free to correct, recategorize and/or rename my photos. It's on my todo list to reconcile my photos against MACRIS. I guess I better speed that up... I've started naming a lot of my photos with the street address, and getting photos of the street address too.
And I don't know if it's a different site, but try the Google Play Store for the app... Unvisited On my devices I click on the 'Play Store' app, a shopping bag icon with a multi-colored triangle. Faolin42 (talk) 22:41, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great minds ... I also include addresses in the names of my photo files. Unfortunately, this doesn't help if addresses have changed since properties were listed on the NRHP. I'm finding that happens occasionally, especially in New England. In fact, I think I've found an instance of this with another of your photos, the George Carpenter House in Uxbridge. MACRIS has the address as 53 S. Main St., instead of the 67 S. Main St. address that's in the NRHP database. I can barely make out the house pictured in MACRIS behind trees and bushes in Google Maps street view, about 250 feet north of the building in your photo.
Re your Android app, it's Google Play on my phone as well. The only app hit I get when I search for "Unvisited" is "Placemarks" by "DNLB" (last updated 8/9/2012). I assume that's not your baby? --Sanfranman59 (talk) 23:34, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's not showing up because I didn't support your version of Android. You can find the version by going into Settings, then selecting About Device. I think I only support 3.0 and above right now. If that's the problem, let me know what your version number is, and I can figure out if I can change Unvisited to support it. Ah ... that's the reason. My phone is more than two years old now. It's version 2.3.6. I've never thought about updating the OS. Is that even possible on these things? --Sanfranman59 (talk) 00:16, 22 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I guess the Google Play store only shows apps supported by your phone. Not sure I would recommend trying to upgrade android on your phone. I'm pretty sure I can change my app to run on 2.3.6. Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Faolin42,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Photo Mosaics[edit]

Out of curiosity, could you go into a little detail of how you constructed the photo mosaics on display at the WikiConference? —Dispenser (talk) 05:03, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The mosaics are "labors of love". The whole process takes about a day. Automated steps mixed with judgment of the results. When I mention writing programs below, I wrote them a while ago, not specifically for the Wikipedia mosaics. Here are the excruciating details...

1) Scanned Wikimedia for photographs of the united states. I looked for photos taken by and submitted by registered Wikipedia users, and actually used on a Wikipedia page. I was looking for Wikipedia photographers who also illustrate articles.

2) At this point I had about 425 photos.

3) Turned each photo into a 65x65 thumbnail with JThumbnailDirectoryJob.java. This lets me manually select which portion of each photo should be the thumbnail image. Often I extract multiple thumbnails from a single photos.

4) At this point I had a directory of about 420 thumbnails.

5) Then I ran JMosaicFrame.java on each thumbnail. It uses the thumbnail as the big picture, expanding each pixel to 65x65. Then it fills in each 65x65 cell of the big picture with one of the other little thumbnails from the directory. To make a perfect match for the required pixel color, it makes the little thumbnail lighter or darker, and draws a colored border around the little thumbnail.

6) I ran this program for every thumbnail creating 420 mosaics, one for each little thumbnail.

7) Then I figure out which thumbnails made good big picture mosaics. I run JCompareOKJob.java on the mosaic directory, which lets me skim the mosaics, deleting the ones that don't work. Usually, this is because the thumbnail is too complicated.

8) At this point I had 358 different photo mosaics.

9) Checked how many photos I had for each state to make sure I had at least 2 for each state. Then chose some more photos for states that didn't have enough.

10) Made thumbnails out of the new photos and repeated steps 5-9 until I had at least 2 thumbnails for each state.

11) The I ran JPosterizeImage.java to crop all the mosaics into a 13x19 inch format and put a caption on each one. This included the list of Wikipedia photographers with images in the mosaics.

12) Skimmed the resulting mosaics, winnowing them down until I had the 10 I liked best.

13) Took the 10 jpg files to my local print shop. They print 13x19 images for 3 bucks each. Custom sizes are much more expensive.

I make a lot of mosaics for dog shelters. I love dogs and they make really good large and small images!

Thanks. While I was hoping that you invented a new automated technique, the posters did inspire me to start saving the download thumbnails from a bot checking all thumbnails. Let me know what happens with that and/or how to access the thumbnails. I'd be interested. That woild shortcut part of my process. Also, you could probably do a web search for photo-mosaics. I'm pretty sure there's free software out there to make them automatically. "free photomosaic maker" gets 90,000 results in google. I just had special requirements, and needed/liked a lot of control. /home/dispenser/cache_thumbs.py and /home/dispenser/commons/thumb are the script and thumbnail directory on Tool Labs. The database u2815_p.thumbsrequested_64 recorded 3,664,315 downloads (9.4 GiB), but due to crashes more exist on disk. Delete/move detection has not been implemented and at some point (like with WMF) it'll hit the file system node limit.

I was planning on using Metapixel due to the CLI interface. However, I was discouraged by the JPEG-artifact-like results in examples (although this may be due to compression) at which point I decided to just ask what you used. Dispenser (talk) 21:41, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! My name is Kevin, one of the organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Last year, you contributed to our 2016 event. It was a great success thanks to you and many others, with over 1,700 people contributing over 11,000 great photos of cultural and historic sites from all over the United States. Over 1,000 of these photos now help illustrate Wikipedia articles, making our open knowledge about United States history and heritage all the better.

I'm pleased to say that we're back this year with Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States, and I'd like to welcome you to participate once again in the event. Check out our updated event page for more information, including updated tips, lists, and prizes. Like last year, you'll be able to upload your new photos of any registered historical site in the United States through the end of September (even if the photos were taken before this month).

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open![edit]

Dear Faolin42,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Town categories for rail trails[edit]

For rail trails that extend through more than one or two towns (like the Mass Central Rail Trail), I'm not sure it's useful to place the trail in every single town category. (Just like we wouldn't place a lengthy rail line, highway, or river in every single town in passes through.) I think it's better to only categorize such trails in regional or county categories (as appropriate) and categorize individual images into the towns. What are your thoughts? I'm OK with removing the town categories. I'm having second thoughts about it. It does get rather lengthy. FYI: Posts like File:W, Bruce Freeman Rail Trail, East Acton MA.jpg - which I'm thrilled you've made a habit of documenting - are whistle posts, which informed train crews to sound the whistle before approaching a grade crossing, bridge, etc. They can go in Category:Whistle posts in the United States. Fitz Henry Lane[edit]

The caption on, and file name for, the photo you posted in Wikimedia -- File:Fitz Hugh Lane House, Gloucester MA.jpg -- is out of date. The artist's name was mistakenly thought to be Hugh from the 1930s roughly but is now, as of 2005-6, accepted to have been Henry. The Wikipedia article covers the change with solid citation to John Wilmerding, an impoirtant scholar and curator in the period and the painter's work. The NP Gallery Detail cited with your photo page also says clearly 'Lane, Fitz Henry (formerly known as Fitz Hugh), House'. I don't know how to change the file name but am hoping maybe you could make the change. (There's a Wikimedia Category name that treats 'Fitz Hugh Lane House' as a simple alternate name; also out of date.) I explain a little more in the edit summary for another similar effort here. I understand if you can't take it up. I'll try to at some point if you haven't, I hope. I do think it's good to effect the change throughout Wiki- if possible. There's a Wikimedia link on the Wikipedia article with Hugh, too. Again, I'm not taking that one on right now. Thanks. Swliv (talk) 00:13, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
